Today the Lord gives us a warning against storing up material things (Luke 12:16-21). We are all material creatures, and all material creatures do this.

This shows a lack of faith that the Lord will keep his promise to look after us. This does not mean that we should not make efforts to look after ourselves or neglect our responsibilities. St. Paul says we must continue to look after our families. This is especially difficult for people who worry about their families. We must have faith and not fear about the necessities in life.

We must drive out fear of hardship and deprivation by having fear of God and from that fear of God will come love of God.

There was a Romanian called George who had a big family, but who was always smiling. People wondered why he doesn´t worry. He said he had “Joy of the Holy Spirit”.

We must live the spiritual life to the full. The more we do so, the better it is for us. A few verses on from this reading, we are reminded that God looks after the birds, though they are not rational creatures. So how much more will he look after us (who are made in his image). So we must have faith and not worry about material poverty [This was repeated 3 times during the course of this sermon].

Hoje o Senhor adverte-nos contra a acumulação de bens materiais (Lucas 12:16-21). Todos nós somos criaturas materiais, e todas as criaturas materiais o fazem.

Isto demonstra uma falta de fé de que o Senhor cumprirá a sua promessa de cuidar de nós. Isto não significa que não devamos esforçar-nos para cuidar de nós próprios ou negligenciar as nossas responsabilidades. São Paulo diz que devemos continuar a cuidar das nossas famílias. Isto é especialmente difícil para aqueles que se preocupam com as suas famílias. Devemos ter fé e não temer quanto às necessidades da vida.
Devemos afastar o medo das dificuldades e das privações pelo temor a Deus, e desse temor a Deus virá o amor a Deus.

Havia um romeno chamado George que tinha uma família numerosa, mas que estava sempre a sorrir. As pessoas perguntavam-se por que razão ele não se preocupava. Dizia que tinha a "Alegria do Espírito Santo".

Devemos viver a vida espiritual plenamente. Quanto mais o fizermos, melhor para nós. Alguns versículos depois desta leitura, somos recordados de que Deus cuida dos pássaros, embora não sejam criaturas racionais. Quanto mais, então, Ele cuidará de nós (que fomos feitos à Sua imagem). Por isso, devemos ter fé e não nos preocupar com a pobreza material [Isto foi repetido 3 vezes durante o sermão].
