Rough notes on Sermon by Reader Vladimir Moss, St. Michael´s Orthodox Church, The Old Borough Cemetery, Guildford, Surrey, England, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Diocese of Pallini and Western Europe, True Russian Orthodox Church (TROC),  https://trueorthodox.eu/archangel-michael-parish-guildford-london-england/, listened to via St. Michael´s Remote Dial-In WhatsApp Voice-only Group, which is transmitted via a group call normally from the Reader James Gross´s phone +44 7887 743567, but which could occasionally be from another phone in the group, such as Matthew´s, +44 7745 118872, when Reader James Gross is away. You should contact Reader James Gross if you wish to join it. As the priest does not reside nearby, most weekends there are just Readers´ Services, with the Saturday Vespers normally at about 6pm British Isles (and mainland Portugal and Madeiran) time, except when there is a Liturgy. On weekends when there is a liturgy, the Saturday Vespers is generally at about 5pm. On week days when there is a Vespers it is generally at about 7pm. When there is a Reader´s Service on Sunday morning it generally starts at about 10.30am. When there´s a liturgy, because of the long distance the priest has to travel, it generally starts at about 9am. Reception is generally good, though there can be occasional problems. It should be noted that this transmission is not available if Reader James Gross is away for any reason, if there is no one else in the group present with a smartphone to transmit. Generally, Matthew then substitutes for Reader James Gross. But, he is normally only able to do so for the services on Sunday morning.

Please note that Reader James Gross tends to be away in Serbia, most years, from roughly the beginning to the middle of July until the beginning of September, civil calendar, leaving Matthew to cover for this period.

However, another parish, St. Joseph´s of Petrograd, Oregon, USA (on Pacific Time, livestreams on YouTube and these livestream videos are then made available for several weeks). This is via a private link:

https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLYGou-bsDjUNmrJ3gyvtgPIlb6OFtfzJ2

St. Joseph´s has more than one priest serving most weekends and so always has a full Liturgy. It also sometimes has additional services which St. Michael´s does not have. Live services are on Western Pacific  Time and the Livestream will say roughly when they are likely to be streamed live, with the option of receiving a notification. No subtitle option is available when it is being livestreamed, though it is sometimes available on playback after it has been livestreamed, including subtitle options in many languages. Note as well that the original is in English, my native language. I am able to check the Word 2019 automatic translation based Portuguese text to some extent, but have only minimal knowledge of Romanian and so am not able to check that in the same way. I would welcome any input from anyone who can do so. I am happy to do automatic translations into other languages on request.

Rough notes now follow:

Sermon from Vladimir Moss at St. Michael´s Guildford:

Tomorrow is the Feast of the Protecting Veil of the Theotokos [the Mother of God][aka “Pokrov” [in Slavic languages, such as Russian].

In 860, when St. Photius was Patriarch of Constantinople, the then [overwhelmingly pagan and also Slavic] Russians had invaded Constantinople by Sea. They seemed to be about to take it.

An all-night vigil was held [at the Church in Blachernae, where there was preserved: the Robe of the Mother of God; Her Head-Veil (mathoria) and part of the Belt-Sash; transferred from Palestine in the Fifth Century AD].

The Mother of God, St. John the Baptist, and St. John the Evangelist all appeared, but just two members of the Congregation, St. Andrew [of Constantinople] the Fool-for-Christ [a Slav by birth] and his disciple, St. Epiphanios.

The Theotokos [which means the bearer [“tokos”] or, in other words, the Mother, of God].

This feast is commemorated and celebrated by the Greeks. But, it is celebrated far more, and very enthusiastically, by the Russians, who converted [en masse] to the [only True, Holy Catholic and Apostolic, and] Orthodox Faith a little over a century later [St. Vladimir, their ruling monarch and his people converted in 988].

This shows that we can not be sure who will be faithful, either in terms of nations, or in terms of individuals.

At the time [860 AD] it was the Greeks who were faithful to the Mother of God, and not the then pagan Russians. The Russians, with their mass baptism during the reign of St. Vladimir, then became faithful to her.

We need to remember, that there is always the possibility that “The last shall be first, and the first shall be last”. Nations, like individuals, go up and down.

We can not be sure that our local church will not fall away.

St. John of Kronstadt pointed out that we can not judge beforehand what the fate of nations or individuals will be.

Many, if not most, people who consider themselves “Orthodox” are convinced that the Jews are already condemned.

But, St. Paul states in Romans that Israel as a whole [meaning most of the Jews then alive at the time of its mass conversion to the [only True] Church, will be saved.  [See Chapters 9-11 which have an overall theme of the role of the Jews and the Gentiles in God´s Plan [for salvation], especially 11:25-36, which has the overall theme of the [completion of the conversion of the Gentiles [followed by the [completion and en masse] conversion of the Jews] [see, above all, Romans 11:25-26.] 11:26 says that Israel as a whole will be saved, after [11:25] the entirety of the gentiles [other nations] that are going to convert as a whole, have already entered the church].

So, [unless, perhaps, we are given the very rare and very great gift of as much clairvoyance as is required of a created being to know, something which is extremely rare, and only a few of the greatest of the saints are given], we don´t know who will be called to the faith. Just as we don´t know who will fall away.

The “Orthodox” [“Christian”] nations have tended to hate neighbouring hostile nations. But, only God knows the full situation. He may be secretly pleased with those neighbouring hostile nations, and angry with the Orthodox nations.

Practically all of the Russian nation has now fallen away.

We must remember [the possibility that] he who shall be last, shall be first (and vice versa).[1]

https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLYGou-bsDjUNmrJ3gyvtgPIlb6OFtfzJ2

As nações "ortodoxas" tendem a odiar as nações vizinhas hostis.

Note aproximative despre predica cititorului Vladimir Moss, Biserica Ortodoxă Sf.

https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLYGou-bsDjUNmrJ3gyvtgPIlb6OFtfzJ2

Sf.

Practic, toată națiunea rusă a căzut acum.
