We are well into Lent, and have reached its 4th Sunday.
Today we commemorate St. Patrick, Apostle of Ireland, a Brit. He came from an Orthodox Christian family somewhere in Wales, in Roman Britain. He lived in the 4th and 5th century AD, a very difficult time.
Roman Britain was under attack from all directions: from the Picts in the North, the Irish in the West, and the Angles, Saxons and the Jutes in the East and the South.
Worse – in AD410 the Romans withdrew their troops from Britain. At that time, Patrick,whose father was a deacon, and whose grandfather was a priest, was captured and taken to Ireland, where he was enslaved and made to look after the sheep. This reminds us of the Prodigal Son, who had to eat the husks of swine.
Patrick wrote a book called “the Confession”. This showed his humility, and his wonderful trust in God. Patrick took an opportunity to escape. He decided he would learn to be a priest and a monk, and went to Lerins, an island in the South of France.
There he had a dream of the people of Ireland, calling him back. They gave him a command to come and save them. So, he went bac to Ireland on his own, relying upon God.
Ireland was almost completely pagan. Patrick converted the great majority of the island. We don´t know off any more extraordinary story. By the time he had finished, Patrick had been made a bishop, probably in France.
Patrick established monasteries, [male and female], and ordained priests. St. Bridget of Ireland was one of his disciples.
St. Columba was not his direct spiritual disciple, but he was, indirectly, and thus Columba was a spiritual descendent of his.
St. Columba died in 464AD [461AD according to some accounts]. He is commemorated every year in a march in New York.
A key lesson from the life of St.Patrick is that, even when things are in decline, everything is possible, with the help of God, even for just one man. Let us try to read what he wrote.

Hoje comemoramos São Patrício, Apóstolo da Irlanda, um britânico. Provinha de uma família cristã ortodoxa algures no País de Gales, na Bretanha romana. Viveu nos séculos IV e V d.C., uma época muito difícil.
A Bretanha romana estava a ser atacada de todas as direcções: pelos pictos, a norte, pelos irlandeses, a oeste, e pelos anglos, saxões e jutos, a leste e a sul.
Pior: em 410 d.C., os romanos retiraram as suas tropas da Bretanha. Nessa altura, Patrício, cujo pai era diácono e cujo avô era padre, foi capturado e levado para a Irlanda, onde foi escravizado e obrigado a cuidar das ovelhas. Isto faz-nos lembrar o Filho Pródigo, que teve de comer as cascas dos porcos.
