Rough notes on Sermon by Reader Vladimir Moss, given in St. Michael´s Orthodox Church, The Old Borough Cemetery, Guildford, Surrey, England, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Diocese of Pallini and Western Europe, True Russian Orthodox Church (TROC), https://trueorthodox.eu/archangel-michael-parish-guildford-london-england/, listened to via St. Michael´s Remote Dial-In WhatsApp Voice-only Group, which is transmitted via a group call normally from the Reader James Gross´s phone +44 7887 743567, but which could occasionally be from another phone in the group, when Reader James Gross is away. You should contact Reader James Gross if you wish to join it. As the priest does not reside nearby, most weekends there are just Readers´ Services, with the Saturday Vespers normally at about 6pm British Isles (and mainland Portugal and Madeiran) time, except when there is a Liturgy. On weekends when there is a liturgy, the Saturday Vespers is generally at about 5pm. On week days when there is a Vespers it is generally at about 7pm. When there is a Reader´s Service on Sunday morning it generally starts at about 10.30am. When there´s a liturgy, because of the long distance the priest has to travel, it generally starts at about 9am. Reception is generally good, though there can be occasional problems. It should be noted that this transmission is not available if Reader James Gross is away for any reason, if there is no one else in the group present with a smartphone to transmit. Generally, Matthew then substitutes for Reader James Gross. But, he is normally only able to do so for the services on Sunday morning.

Please note that Reader James Gross tends to be away in Serbia, most years, from roughly the beginning to the middle of July until the beginning of September, civil calendar, leaving Matthew to cover for this period.

However, another parish, St. Joseph´s of Petrograd, Oregon, USA (on Pacific Time, livestreams on YouTube and these livestream videos are then made available for several weeks). This is via a private link:

https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLYGou-bsDjUNmrJ3gyvtgPIlb6OFtfzJ2

St. Joseph´s has more than one priest serving most weekends and so always has a full Liturgy. It also sometimes has additional services which St. Michael´s does not have. Live services are on Western Pacific Time and the Livestream will say roughly when they are likely to be streamed live, with the option of receiving a notification. No subtitle option is available when it is being livestreamed, though it is sometimes available on playback after it has been livestreamed, including subtitle options in many languages. Note as well that the original is in English, my native language. My Apple Mac, on which I had Word 2019, with its translation function, is broken and I have been told it will take about a month to repair. This means that I will have to experiment with online translation, or simply translate manually. This will only be into European Portuguese, as there is one member of our church, who has lived in Portugal for 20 years who speaks and reads Portuguese, but not English. I will therefore not be doing an automatic translation into Romanian.

https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLYGou-bsDjUNmrJ3gyvtgPIlb6OFtfzJ2

Rough notes on Sermon delivered by Reader James Gross based on a written sermon by Father Hariton which Father Hariton then interpreted consecutively into Romanian

We saw the 8 days of the Feast of the Nativity. 8 being a number of perfection, we see the 8 days of baptism. That is why this Great, Royal, Feast lasts 8 days.

Except as an exception on the verge of death, we do not take Holy Water before Holy Communion.

In Holy Communion, He also buried ancestral sin inherited from Adam and Eve.

Baptism (from the Greek “baptizein”, to immerse [repeatedly] must only be done canonically, through three immersions [in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, the triune God].Baptism is a Theophany, or an “Epiphany” – a showing of the Lord.

We will explore these Theophanies, or appearances of the Lord with the Holy Spirit, in both the Old and the New Testament.

In the Old Testament we have the Baptism of [the Pool of] Siluan.

In the Old Testament it is external, and renewed unto the ages of ages.

There was sanctification.

John the Baptist´s baptism was intermediate, between the Old and the [final] New Testament baptism. It did not give the person being baptised the Holy Spirit [but he was the Forerunner, preparing them for Christ].

There was a gradual revealing of Christ and his message in the New Testament.

But his message is only fully revealed at Pentecost, when the Holy Fire came down, covering those present, including Mary, the Theotokos, the Mother of God.

At the baptism of the Lord, the Holy Spirit descended in the form of a dove. This is why it has to be performed by a priest, because it has to be performed by someone who has been ordained [with full powers to serve the liturgy].

The so called “christening” or “baptism” of the heterodox, such as the Romanists, consisting of a mere sprinkling of “Holy Water” rather than repeated immersion of the whole body, is ineffective and, anyway, is being performed by those who have lost the priesthood over the faithful and the eternal guide.

There is the baptism of tears, of long-suffering, leading sometimes to martyrdom, sometimes in the form of [“red”] martyrdom in which someone, whether or not they have been baptised through three immersions, refuses to renounce the Lord, and confesses his benefactor to the point of sacrifice. If they have not received ordinary baptism, they receive “baptism of the blood” [the highest form of baptism, from which the soul immediately goes to heaven as a saint].

Father Hariton: we have to consider forgiveness. There are unusual circumstances to consider, in some cases, concerning baptism. We need to consider how we should proceed.

We have already considered baptism through martyrdom.

There is the case of someone being unable to receive Orthodox baptism, but praying for and receiving it in the form of rain, which God had seen as baptism.

There are times when people are in immediate danger of dying and are baptised [by “economy”] through the sprinkling of [ideally a large amount of] water on them, or applying a cross (e.g. over a child).

But, if they recover, they must then receive a full baptism.

Father Hariton gave the example of a 5 month old baby girl, when he was just a deacon, whom he took out of an incubator, and baptised, though he did not have either a cross or his vestments on him.

There is a further case from history – in the desert, in which, due to a lack of water, someone was baptised with the pouring of sand on their head. Through a series of miracles, both the baptiser and the baptised were saved from dying in the desert. They came across a monastery, and there the baptiser was ordained a priest, and the baptised man a deacon, by the abbot [who must therefore have been a bishop, as well as being an abbot].

In another case, a priest was asked to baptise a baby. Before he was able to get there, however, the baby died. So the priest said prayers to revive the baby.

The baby was resurrected. It was then baptised, chrismated and given holy communion. Then the baby died for a second and final time.

It must be emphasised that nobody will get to the Kingdom of Heaven if they have not been baptised. A thorough catechism is required before anyone is baptised.

notas sobre o sermão proferido

por

Leitor

O Batismo

(do grego

grego “baptizein”, imergir [repetidamente] deve

Vamos

Vamos explorar estas Teofánias, ou aparições do

do Senhor com o Espírito Santo,

em ambos

no

Antigo

e no Novo Testamento.

No
