As the priest does not reside nearby, most weekends there are just Readers´ Services, with the Saturday Vespers normally at about 6pm British Isles (and mainland Portugal and Madeiran) time, except when there is a Liturgy. On weekends when there is a liturgy, the Saturday Vespers is generally at about 5pm. On week days when there is a Vespers it is generally at about 7pm. When there is a Reader´s Service on Sunday morning it generally starts at about 10.30am. When there´s a liturgy, because of the long distance the priest has to travel, it generally starts at about 9am. Reception is generally good, though there can be occasional problems. It should be noted that this transmission is not available if Reader James Gross is away for any reason, if there is no one else in the group present with a smartphone to transmit. Generally, Matthew then substitutes for Reader James Gross. But, he is normally only able to do so for the services on Sunday morning.

Please note that Reader James Gross tends to be away in Serbia, most years, from roughly the beginning to the middle of July until the beginning of September, civil calendar, leaving Matthew to cover for this period.

St. Joseph´s has more than one priest serving most weekends and so always has a full Liturgy. It also sometimes has additional services which St. Michael´s does not have. Live services are on Western Pacific Time and the Livestream will say roughly when they are likely to be streamed live, with the option of receiving a notification. No subtitle option is available when it is being livestreamed, though it is sometimes available on playback after it has been livestreamed, including subtitle options in many languages. Note as well that the original is in English, my native language. My Apple Mac, on which I had Word 2019, with its translation function, is broken and I have been told it will take about a month to repair. This means that I will have to experiment with online translation, or simply translate manually. This will only be into European Portuguese, as there is one member of our church, who has lived in Portugal for 20 years who speaks and reads Portuguese, but not English. I will therefore not be doing an automatic translation into Romanian.

Last Sunday we thought about the patience of the Holy Forefathers of Christ (going back thousands of years). How patient they were and how weak our patience is in comparison.

What were the Holy Fathers waiting for?

The coming of the Messiah? But, who was he? The Pharisaical Jews were expecting a military leader who would drive out their enemies, a conqueror.

Christ was not a Messiah like this.

The Holy Fathers viewed things differently from the Pharisaical viewpoint.

For a start, there were two ways in which the Holy Fathers saw things very differently.

The Holy Fathers were all descendants of those who had been thrown out of the Garden of Eden, for partaking of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil (and failing to repent of it) (They did not need knowledge of this when they already had knowledge of the Tree of Life.

Secondly, they knew that the Tree of Life (Christ) had already taken root in Bethlehem.

So, from this the question arose: how could they partake of the Tree of Life. The answer was to eat it. To eat Christ.

This has to be done through partaking of the body and blood of Christ, through Holy Communion. When they had received it, they would be spared physical death. And thus their faculties would be renewed.

St. Gregory of Nyssa points out that the body and blood of Christ, the sacrificial lamb, metaphorically speaking, had already been sacrificed mystically at the Last Supper [outside the boundaries of time].

So, the Holy Fathers were waiting not only for Life, but for death.

Christ chose to die as the Lamb of God, slain for the sake of the whole world.

After he was slain, Christ then descends into Hades.

The Holy Fathers are saved through Christ´s death and subsequent resurrection.

This is hinted at in the Troparia in the days leading up to Christmas.

We will experience the fullness of Christmas in a few weeks time.

Notas aproximadas sobre o Sermão de Vladimir Moss

No domingo passado pensámos na paciência dos Santos Antepassados de Cristo (que remonta a milhares de anos). Quão pacientes eles foram e quão fraca é a nossa paciência em comparação.

O que esperavam os Santos Padres?

A vinda do Messias? Mas, quem era ele? Os judeus farisaicos esperavam um líder militar que expulsasse seus inimigos, um conquistador.

Cristo não era um Messias assim.

Os Santos Padres viam as coisas de forma diferente do ponto de vista farisaico.

Para começar, havia duas maneiras pelas quais os Santos Padres viam as coisas de maneira muito diferente.

Os Santos Padres eram todos descendentes daqueles que tinham sido expulsos do Jardim do Éden, por participarem da Árvore do Conhecimento do Bem e do Mal (e não se arrependerem dela) (Eles não precisavam de conhecimento disso quando já tinham conhecimento da Árvore da Vida.

Em segundo lugar, sabiam que a Árvore da Vida (Cristo) já se tinha enraizado em Belém.

Daí surgiu a pergunta: como poderiam participar da Árvore da Vida? A resposta foi comê-lo. Para comer Cristo.

Isto tem de ser feito através da participação do corpo e do sangue de Cristo, através da Santa Comunhão. Quando o recebessem, seriam poupados à morte física. E assim as suas faculdades seriam renovadas.

São Gregório de Nisa assinala que o corpo e o sangue de Cristo, o cordeiro sacrificial, metaforicamente falando, já tinham sido sacrificados misticamente na Última Ceia [fora dos limites do tempo].

Assim, os Santos Padres esperavam não só pela Vida, mas pela morte.

Cristo escolheu morrer como o Cordeiro de Deus, morto por causa do mundo inteiro.

Depois de morto, Cristo desce ao Hades.

Os Santos Padres são salvos pela morte de Cristo e subsequente ressurreição.

Isso é sugerido na Troparia nos dias que antecedem o Natal.
